July 7 - Museum and Factory Tour

A visit to the Silverstone Museum and the Red Bull Factory

Gwyn and Michele will be going to the V&A Museum to see a Cartier exhibit.

After breakfast we headed to the Caffè Nero in Stratford Upon Avon Bridge St and got a luxurious hot chocolate. Andy got his Cafe Americano. The bus was a bit slower getting to Silverstone since this was the day after the race, and the special lanes that had been setup had been removed. The driver knew a trick or two. We got there at 10:00. The Silverstone Museum was really good. They even had a slot race course patterned after Silverstone Silverstone Scalextric, which we raced.

We then headed to The Boat Inn for lunch. I had salmon, and a brownie and ice cream for lunch. While we waited to board the bus, I looked at the homes nearby. There were different animals on top of the thatched roofs. Apparently these are the trademarks of the people who repaired the roofs.

Back on the bus and off to Milton Keynes for the Red Bull factory tour. Really impressive! The main building houses many of the former cars. We went over to the building that houses the trophies which ran from floor to ceiling. It is setup like a campus. There is one building that is leased out to a coffee company, but when that lease expires it will revert back to Red Bull.

Over to the manufacturing building. There is a mission control room setup during race day where they can monitor all of the telemetry and data. The people in that room do not count for the people that are at the track. I believe she said that they can have 63 people total at the track. Went by the painting room. The sponsor emblems are painted right onto the car so it does not interfere with the air flow. Got to see the kilns that set the carbon fiber. There were bags around the elements that had hoses to suck the air out. They have two 3D printers. She passed around an aluminum cylinder and a titanium cylinder which was much heavier. Then we went to an area where they had a full car with the booms that went over the car like at a pit stop. And they also had two cars that the mechanics we were working on. One of them was Yuki's from the race that they had pretty much stripped down.

We visited the Heritage building which had some cars getting ready for the Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend coming up. And it had Adrian Newey's Valkyrie on display.

When we were done they handed out a goodie bag with a hat, a notebook, and a can of sugar free Red Bull.

The bus back was pleasant. We walked over to Lambs oh Sheep Street for dinner. I had fillet of seabream and Andy had the lamb. We walked back through the park and by the river. A very nice day.
